Haig Pedian, a respected leader in the rug and carpet retail industry, passed away on Wednesday, January 7, at the age of 101.
In the 1940s, Mr. Pedian and his brothers, Ara and Vahan, expanded their father’s business to meet the growing demand for installed carpeting. A decade later, the company again led the industry by embracing vinyl, marble, ceramic, and wood flooring. Pedian Rugs became known as a trend and style leader, earning two American Carpet Awards for Retail Excellence and the Chicago Floor Covering 50-Year Golden Tribute. The Pedian family also operated Oriental Rugs International in the Mart for many years.
A first-generation Armenian American, Mr. Pedian served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and was deeply devoted to the Armenian community. He was a former chairman of the Chicago Chapter of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) and a major benefactor of St. Gregory Armenian Church in Chicago.
Haig Pedian is survived by his wife, Agnes; his son, Haig Jr.; his daughter, Laura; and his granddaughter, Austinah. He will be fondly remembered by his family and community.
